Fipronil
Warning: Fipronil is one of the most environmentally damaging topical treatments. Use with extreme caution for your surrounding ecology, waterways and wildlife. We hope that it becomes regulated in the future for this reason.
Although it is an over-the-counter product you must still consult your vet.

An over-the-counter remedy for feather mites, fipronil is most commonly seen in Frontline® or Fiprotec® pipettes at a rate of 402mg (4,02ml). So the following calculations by Kaat Deleux are based on that active ingredient content.
For a 600-800kg horse, 1250mg fipronil required to treat all four legs. This works out at between 3 and 4 of the XL size pipettes.
For Frontline Spray bottle (if still available), 125ml per leg. It is far less concentrated than the pipettes.
Repeat after 7-10 days.
Consult your vet before use.
